Reversi

Reversi is a classic two-player strategy board game played with discs that are light on one side and dark on the other. Players compete to have the majority of discs showing their color when the game ends.

Players

•
Black moves first
•
White moves second
•
Players alternate turns

Setup

•
The game is played on an 8×8 uncheckered grid (64 squares).
•
64 identical discs are used, black on one side and white on the other.
•
Four discs are placed in the center of the board: Black at d5 and e4, White at d4 and e5 (diagonal pattern).

How to Play

Placing a Disc

On your turn, you place a disc with your color facing up on an empty square. The placement must outflank at least one of your opponent's discs:
•
Your placed disc and another disc of your color must bracket a continuous straight line of opponent discs.
•
Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
•
There must be no empty squares between your discs and the opponent's discs.

Flipping Discs

After placing a disc, all opponent discs caught between your new disc and your existing discs (in every applicable direction) are flipped to your color.
•
If your placement outflanks in multiple directions simultaneously, all outflanked discs in all directions are flipped.
•
Flipped discs do not cause chain reactions — only the discs directly outflanked by the newly placed piece are flipped.

Passing

If you have no valid moves (no placement that outflanks an opponent disc), your turn is passed to your opponent. If a valid move is available, you must play it — you cannot voluntarily pass.

Winning

The game ends when neither player can make a valid move. This typically happens when:
•
All 64 squares are filled.
•
One player's discs are completely eliminated.
•
Empty squares remain, but no legal placement exists for either player.
The player with the most discs of their color on the board wins. If both players have the same number of discs, the game is a draw.
