Ashte Kashte
Overview
Ashte Kashte is a classic, ancient race-and-capture board game originating from Bengal, India. Often considered a predecessor to Pachisi, Parcheesi, and Ludo, it is a game of both luck and strategy. The name "Ashte" means eight, hinting at the special cowrie shell scoring.
Objective
Be the first player to move all 4 of your tokens from your starting square to the exact center of the board.
Equipment
•
Board: A 7×7 square grid (49 squares). The center square is the final destination.
•
Tokens: Each player gets 4 tokens of a unique color.
•
Dice: 4 cowrie shells (simulated digitally).
Setup
•
2 to 4 players sit around the four sides of the board.
•
Each player places their 4 tokens on their designated starting square (the middle square on the edge closest to them):
•
Red starts at the bottom center
•
Blue starts at the right center
•
Green starts at the top center
•
Yellow starts at the left center
Cowrie Shell Scoring
How to Play
1.
Roll: On your turn, throw the cowrie shells. Your roll determines how many squares you can move one token.
2.
Move: Tap one of your tokens, then tap the highlighted landing square. Tokens travel in a counterclockwise inward spiral — along the outer edge first, then spiraling toward the center.
3.
Extra Turns: Rolling a 4 or an 8 (Ashte) grants you an extra turn. Capturing an opponent also grants an extra turn. These can chain together.
4.
Pass: If no token can legally move the rolled number, your turn passes.
Path
Tokens follow a continuous counterclockwise spiral path:
1.
Outer ring (24 squares): Travel along the board's outer edge
2.
Middle ring (16 squares): Continue inward on the next ring
3.
Inner ring (8 squares): Continue inward on the innermost ring
4.
Center (1 square): The final destination
Each player enters the spiral from their starting position and must traverse all rings before reaching the center.
Capturing
•
If your token lands on an unprotected square occupied by an opponent's token, you capture it. The opponent's token is sent back to its starting square.
•
Capturing grants you an extra turn.
•
Tokens on safe squares (marked with ✦) cannot be captured. Multiple tokens from opposing players can coexist on safe squares.
Safe Squares
The following squares are safe zones where captures cannot occur:
•
The 4 starting squares (one per player)
•
The 4 inner ring entry squares
The Blood Rule
A player cannot enter the inner spiral (rings 2 and 3) until they have captured at least one opponent's token. If your tokens reach the end of the outer ring without having captured anyone, they must wait until you make a capture elsewhere.
Winning
•
You must reach the center square by exact count. If your roll would overshoot the center, you cannot move that token.
•
The first player to successfully move all 4 tokens to the center wins!
Draw Condition
The game ends in a draw if no player can advance any token. This is checked directly: if no player has a legal 1-square move, then no larger move is possible either (both the path-length limit and the Blood Rule are monotonic with distance). Concretely, a draw occurs when:
•
No player has made a capture (so the Blood Rule blocks entry to the inner spiral), AND
•
All pieces have reached the end of the outer ring (path index 23), where even a 1-square move would cross the outer ring boundary
The game detects this automatically after every action and ends immediately when the condition is met.
